Skebby offer a very good free sms service, when tested by TextMeFree it worked very quickly to the UK and Spain, and it's a worldwide service, so text any country for free. You get 3 free sms daily. The site is easy to use, just requiring the country code and mobile number of the recipient.

Blinko
Blinko is a social site, that is easy to join - there is a simple registration process - and once you have joined and invited your friends, you can send unlimited free text messages to other Blinko users. And, those users don't have to be logged on to their Blinko account to receive the sms.
The website is available in English, Spanish, French and Italian. You can also have the Blinko free sms service on your mobile, using WAP.

SMSteroid
100 free SMS every month (limited to 5 a day) to any network in any country. Have just tested this site and it works well, the sms arrived almost immediately. You have to register to use smsteroid and that gets you 10 free sms to any mobile/cell phone. If you verify your phone by giving your mobile number and then entering a code on their website that is sent to you by sms, you will then get 100 free sms per month to any country.
