Made up of several islands, the Associated Free State of Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States but is semi-autonomous. Puerto Rico is often referred to as Borinquen by it's inhabitants, which comes from its original Indian name. The island is mostly mountainous and lies on a stress line between tectonic plates with the deepest trench in the Atlantic Ocean lying just 120 km from the island. It was originally colonised by the Spanish in 1508, but during the Spanish - American war was taken over by the United States. The island is a major tourist destination in the Caribbean as well as being an important pharmaceutical centre. Both Spanish and English are spoken on the islands but Spanish is the dominant language. There are different cultural influences, with the main ones being the original native Indian; African, because of the transportation of slaves; Spanish, from being a Spanish colony; and of course American. | ||||
