The first civilisation in what is now called the Republic of India existed almost 5,000 years ago. The current Indian state obtained its independence from Great Britain in 1947 and in so doing was split from what is now called Pakistan. The Himalayas to the north of India separate the country from the rest of Asia. The sub-continent, as it is also called, has a huge coastline with the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. India is divided into 28 states and seven Union Territories, most of which are governed by elected governments although most of the union territories have administrators rather than elected politicians. There are 18 official languages in India, although hundreds of dialects exist too. In recent years India has undergone many economic reforms which have enabled a huge growth in economic development combined with foreign trade and investment. Now India is one of the fastest growing economies with the 2nd largest work force in the world - the population of India is 1.1 billion. Diwali (the festival of light), Holi, Id, Christmas, Mahaveer Jayanthi are just some of the many festivals celebrated every year showing the diversity of culture. India is famous for its curry, a combination of herbs and spices, onion, garlic and ginger which can be mixed with either meat, chicken, fish or vegetables. Each region has its own speciality. India has one of the largest telecommunication networks in the world, with the main players being Hutch, Tata, Reliance, Bharti, BSNL and MTNL. |
